News from Miss Gloria's Class, 4/03/09

Friday, April 3, 2009 Letter of the Week: E

On Monday, we read An Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni. In this book, Jessica, the frog, believes that she has found a huge pebble. Her frog friend, Marilyn, tells her that what she has found is not a huge pebble, but a chicken egg. Shortly thereafter, the egg cracks open. The frogs soon learn that an alligator, and not a chicken, has been hatched. For our letter E art project, the boys and girls made the planet Earth. First, they took a coffee filter and flattened it out. Then, they were given two eyedroppers. One eyedropper was for blue paint to represent the oceans and the other eyedropper was for green paint to represent the land. They dripped the colored paints from the eyedroppers onto the coffee filter to make an illustration of the Earth.

On Tuesday, we read The Matzah Man by Naomi Howland. In this adaptation of The Gingerbread Boy, a matzah man runs away from Mr. Cohen, the baker. He runs all through the town until he ends up at a family seder. For the letter of the week art project, the boys and girls painted the E blue and added green collage paper for the land.

On Wednesday, one group of children put frogs on their journal page and the other children read Passover! by Roni Schotter. This rhyming book tells how Passover is celebrated in the home beginning with cleaning the house, cooking the Passover meal, reading from the Haggadah, hiding the afikomen, and then, finding the afikomen. In yoga class, Miss Kim asked the children to wish someone well as they practiced yoga breathing. The boys and girls played "Yoga Simon Says", too. They are really getting good at this game as it is getting harder for Miss Kim to trick them! Miss Kim told a story about a bird and the children acted out the story with yoga poses.

On Thursday, we read Elmer by David McKee. Elmer, the elephant, stands out amongst the other elephants with his brightly-colored patchwork body. Our art project was to make Elmer elephants. On Friday, we read Kippi and the Missing Matzah by Louise Gikow. This Sesame Street story has Elmo and Kippi in search of the matzah that was taken from their Passover seder table. The boys and girls made matzah men for their arts and crafts project.
