Letter of the Week: I

On Monday, the children were very excited to come back to school after
the Passover holiday. This week, they are preparing for our Spring
Shabbat Dinner. For our table centerpieces, the boys and girls began
making spring flowers. They painted coffee filters with bright
colored paint, and later in the week, they will add the pipe cleaner
stems. Lucia was our kid of the day and her grandfather played his
cello for the children. He taught them the names of the parts of the
cello and the children listened to the sounds that the cello makes.
He played, "Do, Re, Mi" and "Happy Birthday" as the boys and girls
sang along. Each child had the opportunity to try playing the cello
by moving its bow back and forth over the strings. All of the
children enjoyed the sounds of the cello and we thank him for sharing
his musical talent with us.

On Tuesday, we read ish by Peter H. Reynolds. In this book, Ramon
loves to draw. He tries to make his drawings "right", but they never
come out that way. Ramon's sister, Marisol, tells Ramon that she
likes his art because it looks ish, vase-ish, tree-ish, and house-ish.
For our art project for the letter I, the boys and girls put an
iguana and an ice cream cone on their letters. We asked the children
to name their favorite flavor of ice cream, too.

On Wednesday, one group put spring flowers on their journal page and
the other group read Inside Mouse, Outside Mouse by Lindsay Barrett
George. In this book, one mouse lives inside a house and the other
mouse lives outside of the house. They follow similar paths, inside
and outside, to meet each other in the middle. Once they meet, a new
friendship begins. In yoga, Miss Kim asked the children to name their
favorite vegetable as they practiced yoga breathing. She read Growing
Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert. As she read the story about planting
and caring for vegetable seeds, the children followed the story with
yoga poses.

On Thursday, we read Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni. Inch by inch, an
inchworm uses its body to measure the living things that it encounters
in the field. For our art project, the boys and girls made a scene
from the book, Inch by Inch, showing an inchworm lost in a field of
tall grass. We played "I Spy". Each child took a turn to find
something in the room that is a certain color or shape.

On Friday, we read The Littlest Candlesticks by Sylvia Rouss. In this
book, Abby makes her very own Shabbat candlesticks. On her
candlesticks, she has painted a golden sun, the colors of a rainbow,
yellow daisies, and a small heart to show how much she loves
celebrating Shabbat. For our project, the children made candlesticks
to decorate our classroom for Shabbat Dinner this evening.
