Miss. Ali's Class news for the weeks of Feb 9th and Feb 16th

The past two weeks we have been discussing Multiculturalism! We talked about how everyone is different, lives in different places, look different and have different customs and families.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, we were fortunate enough to have some parent volunteers come in to talk about different places that they have lived around the world.

On Monday, Fred Squires came in to talk to the children about living in Israel! We learned how big Israel was, was kind of food they eat there and what they enjoy doing for fun!
We got to create our own beautiful Israeli flag too! We even got to sample some delicious jelly doughnuts!

On Tuesday, Fanny Ziegler came in to talk about growing up in Argentina! We learned about different animals that were found in Argentina and what their names were in Spanish! Fanny even read us a book in Spanish! We got to color and label our very own map of Argentina! Fanny also brought in a delicious cookie that is eaten as a treat in Argentina!

On Wednesday, Gloria Baroni came in to discuss Italy! We played a picture matching game, where we had to locate Italian landmarks on a map! We also got to color a picture of what a Doctor looks like in Italy! We got to sample some delicious bread sticks and hazelnut spread~!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE WONDERFUL PARENTS WHO CAME IN!

This week we wrapped up our unit on Multiculturalism by making a rainbow of all different color people, we called this "Living in Harmony" because everyone is different, but we all should live in peace and be happy.

We completed our letter of the Week "K" and did a fun "K" words project. We also began practicing the number 9!

Songs

Miss Terri and Miss Amber-Jordana and friends are coming home singing LOTS of songs from school. We'd love to be able to sing them with her...maybe you'll do a greatest hits CD ? (in your spare time?)

News From Ms. Terri and Ms Amber: February 5, 2009

Hi Moms, Dads and Special Grown-ups

We've had a busy few weeks. We have been reading even more snowy weather books while we talked about letter S. The children made some super silver sparkle S's. They attached them to snowflakes. The Kitten class has two friends whose names start with letter S, Simon and Sydney.
We added pictures of them to our Snowflake collage.

Another of our favorite books about snow is When It Starts to Snow by Phillis Gershator and Martin Matje. The children really like making all of the animal noises and learning what their homes were called. We were all puzzled by an animal not many had heard about, the stoat.
A stoat is a small carnivorous mammal from the weasel/ermine family. Some of them change their coats from brown in the Spring/Summer to white in the Winter time.

We also read one of my most favorite books Crictor by Tommy Ungerer. Madame Bodot receives a mysterious "O" shaped gift for her birthday. Crictor the brave boa constrictor becomes her pet and good friend. He even saves the town from a sneaky burglar. The children made some great portraits of Crictor.

Next we talked about the letter F. We read The Book of F by Jane Werner and William Dugan and "Fire Fire!" Said Mrs McGuire by Bill Martin Jr. and Vladimir Radunsky. The children had great "fun" "finding" things that started with letter F around the classroom...like feathers, french fries, flowers, etc.

http://images.barnesandnoble.com/images/15020000/15028902.JPG

We made the letter F into a Flamingo and tried to stand on one foot like they do.
We learned oodles of songs for letter F.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5
I caught a fish alive
Why did I let him go?
Because he bit my finger so

We also sang about 5 Funny Fish and Five Green and Speckled Frogs
I think they are fast favorites and we'll be singing them frequently!

For letter W we read Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes. The children agreed with Wemberly's Grandmother, she worried too much. They thought it was really silly that Wemberly feared she would shrink if she got a bath. A few children said that your fingers got wrinkly, but not to worry, they go back to normal after awhile! We painted a Winter scene on our W's and put a picture of Wemberly worrying to remember the story.

With all of the snow we've been getting, we added another favorite Winter book,
Grandmother Winter by Phyllis Root and Beth Krommes. We cut up some white feathers like the ones Grandmother collected from her geese, and blew them around and made pretend snow inside. The children made snow geese to gabble and squawk and honk and hiss. This book also has beautiful wood cut illustrations by Beth Krommes. The story also talks about lots of different animals and where they live during the Winter.

For Letter P we read Playful Little Penguins by Tony Mitten and Guy Parker Rees. The children made Penguin collages that were holding pink and purple P's. We waddled like penguins during circle time and of course found out what our names would sound like if we changed the first letter to the letter P. This is one of our favorite things to do when we talk about a new letter.

We are getting ready to celebrate Tu B'Shevat this coming week. We are looking forward to singing Happy Birthday to the trees and doing lots of tree related activities. We started reading another Sammy Spider adventure. Sammy Spider's First Tu B'Shevat by Sylvia Rouss and Katherine Janus Kahn teaches the children about the seasons and talks about all of the magical things that trees provide for people and animals. We began doing large table paintings in greens and browns so that we can decorate our room with even more trees...showing different seasons.
We are very excited to plant some parsley seeds fro Tu B'Shevat. We think they will be ready to harvest in time for Pesach!

*The Playschool will be closed beginning on Thursday, February 12 through Tuesday, February 17 for the President's Day holiday.

* Please use the radio, TV, or Internet to find out if the Philadelphia Public Schools are open or closed. If the schools are open, then we are open. If closed, then we are closed. This is the only way that you will find out about Playschool weather closings.

* If you have not already brought in a new supply of diapers for your child, please bring some in as supplies are dwindling.

Thanks for all you do!
Shabbat Shalom and enjoy the weekend.

Friday, February 6, 2009 Letter of the Week: P

On Monday, for Groundhog's Day, we read Gregory's Shadow by Don Freeman. Gregory Groundhog loses his shadow. Gregory searches in the winter's snow to find his shadow before he needs to make his appearance for the farmers. Once he finds his shadow, Gregory and his shadow plan to stay together and never be parted again. In Punxsutawney, PA, the groundhog saw his shadow so legend says that there will be six more weeks of winter. At one time, it was believed that groundhogs could predict the weather. For our art project, the children made groundhogs coming out of their burrows.

On Tuesday, we read My Preschool by Anne Rockwell. In My Preschool, a child's preschool experiences are very similar to the experiences of the Playschool children. This book tells how the children put their coats in cubbies, listen to stories, paint at easels, play outdoors, practice yoga, sing songs, and wait for their grown-ups to pick them up at dismissal time. We learned many letter P words: paint, pig, porcupine, penny, pizza, pie, pocket, and puppy, to name a few. For our letter P art project, the children decorated the letter P with a pink and purple porcupine on a polka dot and pinstriped background.

On Thursday, we read Pie in the Sky by Lois Ehlert. This colorfully illustrated book tells about the growth of a cherry tree. Once the cherries are ripe, then they can be eaten in a pie. Our letter P art project was to make a pine tree. The boys and girls used pine needles, instead of brushes, to apply the paint to their trees. Next week, we will celebrate Tu B'Shevat, the birthday of the trees. We talked about what makes trees and plants grow, the fruits that grow on trees, and things that are made from trees.

On Friday, we read Sammy Spider's First Tu B' Shevat by Sylvia A. Rouss. Sammy Spider watches Mr. Shapiro and Josh plant a tree. As the seasons pass, the tree changes. To celebrate Tu B'Shevat, Sammy Spider spins the tree a special birthday gift. Our art project was to make tree necklaces.

*Thank you to Ava, Thomas, and Maxwell for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

*Don't forget about Afterschool Arts Clubs. The children have a great time participating in free play, story, bike riding, snack, and Cooking, Science, Art, Movement, and Music. This week, on Monday, the children baked number cookies. On Tuesday, for Science, they made models of a volcano, and on Thursday, they painted the models. Please have your child try Afterschool Arts to see what fun it is!

*Next week, we will plant parsley seeds for Tu B'Shevat and learn letter V. Have a great weekend!

News from Ms. Gloria, Friday, January 30, 2009

Friday, January 30, 2009 Letter of the Week: M

On Monday, we read Martha in the Middle by Jan Fearnley. There was Clara mouse, who was big and sensible, and Ben mouse, who was little, clever, and cutesy, and Martha mouse, who was just Martha. She did not like always being in the middle. Once Martha learned that the best things are sometimes in the middle, like the seeds of a sunflower or the juiciest part of a watermelon, she changed her mind and enjoyed being the middle mouse. The boys and girls made masks using collage materials. We learned letter M words, like Monday, mommy, mix, muffin, and the names of our friends, Max, Maxwell, and Miss Mindy. We listened to Preschool Aerobic Fun by Georgiana Stewart and the children participated in aerobic movement.

On Tuesday, we read The Secret Birthday Message by Eric Carle. In this book, a secret message is written in code. The children had to follow the clue shapes to find the birthday present surprise. For our letter M art project, the boys and girls painted the letter M using magenta paint. On the M, they placed a moose using a mower to cut the grass.

On Thursday, we read Ben's Trumpet by Rachel Isadora. Ben listens to the music of the Zig Zag Jazz Club. He loves hearing the rhythms of the piano, saxophone, trombone, and drums. He dreams that one day he can learn how to play the trumpet. When one of the musicians sees how Ben pretends to play the trumpet, the musician gladly brings him into the Jazz Club and shows him how to play his favorite instrument. For a special treat, Miss Lily brought in her cello to play for the class. She told us about the parts of a cello and we listened to the sounds that the cello makes. The children tried to identify high and low sounds and fast and slow sounds. They named some of their favorite songs, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, the ABC's, and the Itsy Bitsy Spider, for her to play. Miss Lily said that she will bring her cello back to school soon so that more of our friends can hear her play. For our art project, the boys and girls made a picture of the musical instrument, the cello.

On Friday, we read The Mitten by Jan Brett. In this book, a lost mitten makes a warm place for animals to hide. For our art project, the boys and girls made monkeys.

*Thank you to Phoebe, Max L., Annalise, Ciampone, Jack F. for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

* Please use the radio, TV, or internet to find out if the Philadelphia Public Schools are open or closed. If the schools are open, then we are open. If closed, then we are closed. This is the only way that you will find out about Playschool weather closings.

*Don't forget about Afterschool Arts Clubs. The children have a great time participating in free play, story, bike riding, snack, and Cooking, Science, Art, Movement, and Music. Please have your child try Afterschool Arts to see what fun it is!

*In looking forward to February, the Playschool will be closed beginning on Thursday, February 12 through Tuesday, February 17 for the President's Day holiday.

*Next week, we will learn about Groundhog's Day, Tu B'Shevat, and letter P. Have a great weekend!
