Friday, May 8, 2009 Letter of the Week: U
On Monday, we read The Squiggle by Carole Lexa Schaefer. This is the book sent from the Art Museum. The Squiggle tells the story of a young girl who finds a squiggle, a red piece of string, and uses her imagination to shape the squiggle into a dragon's tail, an acrobat, fireworks, a storm cloud, and the moon. For our art project, we used various colored yarn and string to make a design. After reading The Squiggle, we asked the children what they would make if they found their own squiggle. Rocketships, the sun, and stars were some of their responses. For a letter O activity, we played an opposite word guessing game.
The theme of our trip to the Art Museum was Art in Asia. We visited three areas of the museum. First, we looked at "Two Hares in Moonlight" in the Korean collection, a piece of art created on a scroll. For a hands-on activity, our museum guide gave each child a red piece of yarn and the children shaped it into a square, circle, oval, triangle, and star. Then, we visited the "Scholar's Study" of China. Lastly, we looked at the Ceremonial Teahouse, representative of Japan, and we noted the bamboo throughout the area. For our art project, the boys and girls made a scroll using ink to make a bamboo design. To begin their project, they used black ink to paint their design on scroll paper. Then, they glued on a longer piece of black scroll paper to the back of their painted one. Next, they added two colored borders onto the edges of their painted paper. And lastly, they stamped two red Art Museum stamps to their scrolls to complete the project.
On Wednesday, one group of children read The Mother's Day Sandwich by Jillian Wynot. This story is about two children who want to make a special breakfast for their mother on Mother's Day. Their meal does not work out as planned, but their mother has found a way of making a very special sandwich that is filled with lots of love. The other group of children made a letter O entry in their journals by coloring an owl with moveable wings. In yoga, Miss Kim practiced yoga breathing with the children and played "Red Light, Yoga Light". The children took an imaginary trip to the beach.
On Thursday, we read I Wished for a Unicorn by Rober Heidbreder. In this fantasy book, a child's imagination creates a kingdom of dragons, wizards, knights, and an unusual unicorn. For our letter U art project, the boys and girls made a unicorn holding an umbrella. We began teaching the children the songs that they will sing for you at their graduation.
On Friday, we read by A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams. This book tells the story of a very special armchair that Rosa, her mother, and her grandmother all share. For our art project, the children made Mother's Day cards.

*Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Parent Teacher Conferences. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to speak to everyone.
*Thank you to all of the parents who accompanied us on our trip to the Art Museum. We hope that you have enjoyed the Museum Looks and Picture Books program.
*Please sign-up for summer camp as soon as possible. Our enrollment works on a first come - first served basis until we have a full enrollment. Camp begins on Monday, June 8 and runs through Wednesday, July 29.
*The last Afterschool Arts Club will be held on Friday, May 22. The Playschool will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day. Our class graduation will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 12 - 1 PM. All children and their families should attend. The children will be singing and we will celebrate together with a luncheon. Please sign up to bring a luncheon food item.

* Next week, we will learn letter X and get ready for our graduation celebration.

News From Miss. Ali, week of May 4th
This week our class talked about caterpillars and butterflies! We were all very excited to see our new caterpillar friends in our classroom. We watch them grow everyday, and can't wait for them to turn into Painted Lady Butterflies!!
On Monday, we made a silly circle caterpillar. We also started writing some big words such as, Him, Her, She, He and It! Our handwriting is looking great!!
On Tuesday, we made some beautiful coffee filter butterflies! We attached them to close pins, gave them some googly eyes and sprayed the coffee filter with a water bottle, to make the colors bleed together. We reviewed some Language Arts Worksheets as well!
On Wednesday, we made very hungry pom pom caterpillars and put them on leaves! We also did the very last page of our Handwriting Without Tears Workbooks!
Thursday, we had a fun drama class with Mr. Michael where we acted out a Dr. Suess book and learned how to be a mime! We also made some beautiful tissue paper butterflies. We did some challenging math worksheets to see if we could count by 2, 5, and even 20's!!
Friday, we had Shabbat with Cantor Carl, went outside and rode some bicycles, and made some great and creative Mother's Day Cards!!

Parents are asked to pack a snack and drink for their child/children. We will return back to school at approx 12:00pm, so you may pack a lunch for you child as well, if they are going to stay for After School Arts.
Playschool will be closed on Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day
Afterschool Arts will end for the year on Friday, May 22nd
PRE-K GRADUATION is on Thursday, May 28th at 11:30-12:3o pm. Please sign up to bring a food dish, if you have not already!!
