News from Ms. Gloria's Class, March 27, 2009

Friday, March 27, 2009 Letter of the Week: A

On Monday, we read Sammy Spider's First Passover by Sylvia A. Rouss. Sammy Spider learns about the Passover seder and finding the afikomen at the Shapiro's holiday dinner. Our art project was to make a Passover seder plate. On the plate is a hard-boiled egg, which represents a sign of new life, the lamb bone, to represent the lambs that were killed to mark an X over the Hebrew homes, salt water, which stands for the tears shed by slaves, parsley for the spring, bitter herbs for the bitterness of slavery, charoset which represents the mortar used to make bricks, and matzah, the bread that did not have time to rise when the Hebrews left Egypt.

On Tuesday, we read A is for Art Museum by Katy Friedland and Marla K. Shoemaker. In this alphabet book, we read each letter as it told about a piece of art or a location in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The boys and girls recognized some of the art and the rooms in the museum from their visits. For our letter A art project, the children put A animals, ant, anteater, and alligator, on their letters. They painted the letter A using aquamarine colored paint.

On Wednesday, one group of children read Up, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres. This colorfully illustrated book shows how some vegetables grow above the ground while others grow below the ground. The other children colored frogs for their journal entry. They sang, "Frogs here, frogs there, frogs are jumping everywhere". In yoga, Miss Kim asked the children to name their favorite fruit as they practiced yoga breathing. They played "Red Light, Yoga Light" and made yoga poses for frogs and dinosaurs. The boys and girls jumped 25 times on their imaginary pogo sticks to and from their river bank destination. They also posed as crabs, butterflies, and the warm, golden sun.

On Thursday, we read Matzoh Mouse by Lauren L. Wohl. This book tells how a young girl conld not resist eating chocolate-covered matzoh before the Passover holiday. For our letter A art project, the boys and girls made imaginary animals with unusual heads, bodies, tails, and legs.

On Friday, we read Dinosaur on Passover by Diane Levin Rauchwerger. For our art project, the boys and girls made afikomen covers. Next week, they will take them home with a special treat inside. The afikomen is the piece of matzah that is hidden by the leader of the seder, the Passover meal. After the seder, the children search for the afikomen, and the child who finds it, wins a prize.

*Thank you to Brooke, Laura, Jonnah, Hayden, and Jack F. for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

*The children have been learning songs for Passover. Please ask them to sing the songs for you.

*Please sign-up for summer camp as soon as possible. Our enrollment works on a first come - first served basis until we have a full enrollment. Camp begins on Monday, June 8 and runs through Wednesday, July 29. We have flexible options for camp scheduling.

Class News From Pre-K Week of March 16th

This past week we went back in time to learn all about DINOSAURS! This was one of the children's favorite units this year!

On Monday, we wrote a journal entry of what we thought dinosaurs may have looked like a long time ago, we also drew some great pictures to go along with our responses! Please check them out around our classroom! We began the letter "N" and practiced counting by 2's, 5's, and even 10's!

On Tuesday, we colored some cool Dinosaur place mats, which can be used at home...The place mats were laminated and sent home, all ready to be used! We talked about pairs in language arts and did some worksheets to practice this.

On Wednesday, we made some Dinosaur headbands! We had a choice of making a stegosaurus Dino, or a long neck Dino..We decorated our headbands with craypas and glitter! We listed some words that began with N, and practiced some more with this letter.

On Thursday, we painted some wooden dinosaurs which we later made into magnets! We also refreshed our memory and did some math connect the dots! In drama, Mr. Michael showed the children what makes poems different from other pieces of literature, and the children had a great time making up their own silly poem about a mouse!

We ended our week Friday, by coloring and decorating the letter "N." We then created some silly sentences all with the letter "N" in them..We had a great time singing songs and dancing at Shabbat!

THANK YOU TO OUR SPECIAL ROYAL READER THIS WEEK, Noah Kauderwood's "Grammy" Dotty Wood!

News from Miss Gloria's Class, March 20, 2009

Friday, March 20, 2009 Letter of the Week: B

On Monday, we read The Magic Hat by Mem Fox. In this book from the Art Museum, a wizard's hat moves like this, and it moves like that. As it moves through the air, the hat lands on the heads of people and changes them into animals. On our classroom bulletin board, you will see that each of the wizards on display is one of the children in our class. For this art project, the boys and girls used a picture of themselves for the wizard's face.

On Tuesday, at the Art Museum, the theme of the lesson was Who is Wearing Hats? In the galleries, we saw the Portrait of Francis I, King of France by Joos van Cleve. The boys and girls looked at King Francis' clothing and decided that he was wearing a fancy hat to match his fancy shirt. For their activity, they dressed a cut-out doll in clothing similar to what King Francis wore. We also saw Portrait of Anthony Reyniers and His Family by Cornelis de Vos. In this art, the Reyniers family was dressed in their best clothing for their family portrait. Some of the family members were wearing hats and some were holding their hats. The boys and girls participated in a hands-on activity of matching clothing. Our last stop in the galleries was to see knight's armor. Along with the armor, the cases were filled with quite an impressive display of swords. The children enjoyed making magic hats for their art project.

On Wednesday, the children made kites, for the winds of March, to put in their journals. The other group read We Are Best Friends by Aliki. This story shows that children can have lasting friendships even when a friend moves away. It makes their time together more special. In yoga, Miss Kim asked the children, "If you could be any animal, what would you be?" The children learned a new yoga stretching game where they had to stretch their bodies while keeping their feet in place on the floor. Their imaginary yoga trip was to go to the park. Each of the children found a partner to work with as they moved their bodies back and forth in a seesaw motion.

On Thursday, we read Ziggy's Blue-Ribbon Day by Claudia Mills. Ziggy does not like to participate in running, jumping, and throwing in track and field events. He knows that he only has to try to do his best, he has to cheer for his friends, and he has to try to have fun. Ziggy's favorite activity is drawing. For each of the track and field events, Ziggy didn't win the blue ribbon, but he found another way to win the first place ribbons. For our art project, the children made beautifully colored butterflies, like the one in The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

On Friday, we read Sammy Spider's First Passover by Sylvia A. Rouss. Sammy Spider learns how the Shapiro family celebrates Passover by preparing for the seder. The seder is the dinner that is held on the first two nights of Passover. During a seder, the story of the Jews' freedom is told, prayers are said, and songs are sung. For our art project, the boys and girls made beaded jewelry.

*Thank you to Ava, Maxwell, Owen, and Jack L. for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

*Thank you to all of the parents who accompanied us on the trip to the Art Museum. Our last trip will take place on Tuesday, May 5.

*Please sign-up for summer camp as soon as possible. Our enrollment works on a first come - first served basis until we have a full enrollment. Camp begins on Monday, June 8 and runs through Wednesday, July 29. We have flexible options for camp scheduling.

*In looking forward to April, the Playschool will be closed from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 17 for Passover. The Playschool will resume on Monday, April 20. Our Spring Shabbat Dinner will be held on Friday, April 24. A class picture will be taken on Monday, April 27. All children should attend so that they are in the group picture. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday, April 30. More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

*Next week, we will learn about letter A and Passover. Have a great weekend!

Friday, March 13, 2009 Letter of the Week: B

On Monday, the children did a fabulous job singing the Purim songs that they worked so hard to learn. They looked great in their costumes and they felt very proud to be performing for all of you. Thank you very much for bringing in all of the luncheon foods and for supporting our programming in the ways that you do.

On Tuesday, we read The Day the Teacher Went Bananas by James Howe. In this book, a new teacher arrives at school. He does some strange and unusual things. He teaches the students to count using their toes, he has the children writing on the walls and on the floor, and he allows them to eat leaves and swing on tree branches. The children are amazed as they watch the teacher eat sixteen bananas for lunch. This was no ordinary teacher, but instead, it was a gorilla. For our letter B art project, the children used blue paint with black and brown paper to decorate the B. They put a bear, missing a button on his overalls, a book, and a banana on the letter B, too.

On Wednesday, the journal group put a picture of a kite, for March winds, on their page. The story group read Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird. Angelina loves dancing and she becomes the happiest mouse in the world when she begins to take ballet lessons. In yoga, Miss Kim asked the children to name a brown animal as they practiced yoga breathing. The boys and girls played "Yoga Freeze". As music played, the children posed as animals. When the music stopped, each child looked for a friend to stand back-to-back with. The imaginary yoga trip was to travel high up on a mountain. They used their bodies to pose as airplanes to reach their destination. On the mountain, the boys and girls cut through the tall grass. They made yoga poses of frogs, snakes, and lions, and thanked the warm, golden sun as they stretched their arms as high as they could.

On Thursday, we read We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. A dad and his children go on a bear hunt. They go through all sorts of obstacles, and finally, they find a bear, get scared, and run back to the safety of their home. For our art project, the boys and girls painted a ceramic gift for their families for Passover.

On Friday, we read Old Bear's Surprise Painting by Jane Hissey. In this book, a group of bears share in the creation of a painting. For our art project, the boys and girls made name tags for our trip to the Art Museum.

*Thank you to Max M., Harry, Anya, Thomas, Phoebe, and Max L. for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

*Tuesday is our trip to the Art Museum. Please pack lunches in a bag for the trip. The cost is $10.00 per child and $10.00 per adult. The theme of the lesson is Who is Wearing Hats?

*Please check with your child's doctor if your child complains of a sore throat. It may be that he/she has strep throat and it should be treated as soon as possible.

News from Miss Gloria's Class, March 6, 2009

Friday, March 6, 2009 Letter of the Week: Q

On Tuesday, we read I. Q. Goes to School by Mary Ann Fraser. In this book, I. Q., the class pet, enjoys going to school, but all he is looking forward to is having his turn as the "student of the week". He gets to sit in a special chair and bring in "show and tell". We explained to the children that being "student of the week" is much like our "kid of the day". For our letter Q project, the children made queens to decorate their letter Q. We learned some Q words, such as queen, quick, quack, quiet, quilt, and quarter. We also read Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by Dr. Seuss, in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. As this book of noises was being read, the boys and girls enjoyed making the noises, too. All week, we have been practicing the Purim songs that the children will sing for you.

On Wednesday, one group of children made Purim entries in their journals. They colored pictures of King Ahashuerus, Queen Esther, Queen Vashti, Mordechai, and groggers. The other group of children read Purim by Carmen Bredeson. In this book, the children saw photographs of other children dressed in costumes for Purim. They learned that Purim is a very happy holiday. In yoga class, Miss Kim asked the children which they liked best - cold weather or hot weather? Miss Kim taught the boys and girls how to play "Back-to-Back Dancing". While music was playing, the children danced. When the music stopped, each dancer had to find a partner to stand back-to-back with. Our imaginary yoga trip was to go on an adventure to the zoo. At the zoo, the children posed as giraffes, frogs, snakes, butterflies, cows, and bats.

On Thursday, we read Sylvia Jean Drama Queen by Lisa Campbell Ernst. Sylvia Jean always has an amazing costume for every occasion. When she gets invited to a costume party, she surprises everyone with what she is wearing. For our art project, we painted with Q-tips.

On Friday, we read Purim Activity Book by Torah Aura Productions. This book tells the story of Purim using photographs of children dressed in costumes of King Ahashueras, Queen Esther, Mordechai, and Haman At Purim, we celebrate with parties, hamantashen, costumes, carnivals, and groggers and we read the Book of Esther from a scroll called a megillah. Our art project was to make king and queen crowns. The children can wear these crowns as a part of their Purim costume on Monday.

*Thank you to Annalise, Lucia, Ciampone, and Cole for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

News from Ms. Gloria, Friday, February 27, 2009

Friday, February 27, 2009 Letter of the Week: L

On Monday, we read The Mystery Bear A Purim Story by Leone Adelson. Purim is a day for feasting and rejoicing. In this story, a bear goes to a Purim party and the other guests believe that he is a person dressed in a bear's costume, not a real bear. For our art project, the boys and girls made groggers. Groggers are noisemakers that are shaken whenever Haman's name is mentioned. The boys and girls have been practicing songs that they will sing for you during our class Purim Parade.

On Tuesday, we read Goldie's Purim by Jane Breskin Zalben. In this book, Goldie celebrates Purim by playing the role of Queen Esther in a Purim play. For our letter of the week, the boys and girls decorated the letter L with lemon hamantashen and they painted the letter L using lime-colored paint. Hamantashen, named after the wicked Haman, are triangle-shaped pastries eaten on Purim. They can be filled with poppy seeds, honey, apricots, cherries, apples, or prunes.

On Wednesday, the journal group chose to color King Ahasuerus, Queen Esther, Queen Vashti, Mordechai, Haman, or a grogger for their journal entry. The other group of children read llama llama red pajama, a bedtime story, by Anna Dewdney. In yoga, as the children practiced yoga breathing, Miss Kim asked if each child liked dinosaurs. If they said that they liked dinosaurs, then they named their favorite dinosaur. If they did not like dinosaurs, they named something else that they liked instead. Miss Kim brought in yoga cards that had illustrations of yoga poses on each card. All of the children had the opportunity to be the teacher and to teach the other children the pose that was shown on the card they selected. Phoebe taught us to thank the warm, golden sun, Ava gave everyone the spaghetti test, Jack L. taught us the downward dog, and Annalise taught us the airplane pose, just to name a few.

On Thursday, we read A Purim Album by Raymond A. Zwerin and Audrey Friedman Marcus. In this book, children, dressed in costumes, put on a play about the story of Purim. For our art project, the boys and girls made puppets of King Ahasuerus, Queen Esther, Mordechai, and Haman for our Purim bulletin board.

On Friday, we read Lazy Lion by Mwenye Hadithi and Adrienne Kennaway. When Lazy Lion orders that a fine house be built for him, the other animals in the land are not able to make a home that is fit for the King of the Beasts. For our letter L art project, the boys and girls made lemon and lime prints.

*Thank you to Kethan, Laura, Brooke, Hayden, and Sebastian for being our super "kids of the day" this week.

* Sunday is our Purim Carnival from 11AM until 1 PM. Don't miss one of the most exciting family events of the year! Games, prizes, face-painting, food, including delicious hamantashen, music, and more! Children may come dressed in costumes, too.

*On Monday, March 9, at 11:30 AM, our class will be singing Purim songs at our Purim Parade. Parents should plan to attend. All children are invited to participate even if Monday is not their day to attend the Playschool. Please pack a costume for your child to wear and let us know what you will be bringing for the luncheon. Sign-up sheets are on our classroom door.

*There will be NO Afterschool Arts on Monday, March 9 following our Purim Parade
and Luncheon because we will be using the Social Hall for the luncheon.

*Please let us know if your child will be going to the Art Museum on Tuesday, March 17. The cost is $10.00 per child and $10.00 per adult.

*Hope to see everyone at the Purim Carnival. Next week, we will learn letter Q. Have a great weekend!
