Friday, February 5, 2010 Letter of the Week: V

On Monday, we read Gregory's Shadow by Don Freeman. Gregory Groundhog loses his shadow. Gregory searches in the winter's snow to find his shadow before he needs to make his annual appearance for the farmers. Once he finds his shadow, Gregory and his shadow plan to stay together and never be parted again. For our art project, the children made groundhogs coming out of their burrows.

On Tuesday, we found out that the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, came out of his burrow and saw his shadow. Legend says that there will be six more weeks of winter. At one time, it was believed that groundhogs could predict the weather. We read A Plant Called Spot by Nancy J. Peteraf. In this book, Teddy learns how to take care of his own plant as well as learning how to take care of his pets. For our letter V art project, the boys and girls made venus flytraps in violet vases that smell like vanilla. The boys and girls learned these other letter V words: violin, voice, van, vine, vegetables, vacuum, velcro, vacation, vampire, and veterinarian.

On Wednesday, the children, in the journal group, drew a tree for Tu B'Shevat and the children, in the story group, read Snip, Snip. . . Snow! by Nancy Poydar. In this book, Sophie makes paper snowflakes while she anxiously waits for it to snow. Once it begins to snow, she sees the beauty in the snowflakes and learns that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. In yoga class, Miss Kim asked the children to pose like trees for Tu B'Shevat. They played "Red Light, Yoga Light" and the child, who moved the slowest, instead of the fastest, was the winner. The yoga imaginary trip took the children to the farm where they posed as farm animals.

On Thursday, we read Purim Activity Book by Torah Aura Productions. This book tells the story of Purim using photographs of children dressed in costumes of King Ahashueras, Queen Esther, Mordechai, and Haman. At Purim, we celebrate with parties, hamantashen, costumes, carnivals, and groggers and we read the Book of Esther from a scroll called the megillah. For our art project, the boys and girls made puppets of King Ahashueras, Queen Esther, Mordechai, and Haman for our Purim bulletin board.

On Friday, we read Sammy Spider's First Purim by Sylvia A. Rouss. Sammy Spider books are always a great way to begin teaching a holiday celebration. In this Purim book, Sammy Spider learns about dressing in costume, eating hamantashen, and shaking a grogger to celebrate this happy time. For our letter V art project, the children made grapes on a vine using their thumbprints.
